A Humidifier Can Make Your Home More Comfortable

January 24th, 2012

Having enough humidity in the air is important for a variety of reasons. While this is usually not a big concern in the summer, unless you live in a dry climate, during the winter months air inside of our homes can get very dry.

What Happens When The Air Is Too Dry

When the air gets too dry it can cause a variety of problems. We need a certain amount of humidity just to be comfortable. When humidity levels drop too low the dry air can cause dry skin and it can dry out our mucous membranes. This can cause sore throats, sinus problems and chapped lips.

It can also affect the way a room feels in regards to temperature. If a room has a higher level of humidity it will feel warmer. In the winter this can make a difference on our monthly energy bill. We can actually even save money each month by using a humidifier and turning the thermostat down a few degrees.

If the air is too dry it can also have an impact on things in our home, like wood floors and wood furniture. Things like wood naturally contain moisture, but when the air is too dry it pulls the moisture out of these items as well. As wood dries it shrinks which can cause creaks in floors while drywall and plaster can start to crack.

Adding Moisture to Your Home

One easy way to remedy dry air in the home is with a humidifier. You can either use a whole house humidifier or a point of use humidifier also called a portable humidifier.

If you own a home and need a humidifier for a larger space a whole house humidifier may be the easiest way to go. If you are in an apartment or condo a portable humidifier will probably be best.

A point of use humidifier can easily be moved to add moisture where you need it most, for instance if you spend the day or evening in the living room you may want the humidifier in that room with you during that time, but you may want to move it to your bedroom while you are sleeping at night.
